Film Festival Commenting

Lately we have been working on cybersmart and stuff with latham, it is very confusing. We watched movies and explained them on a slide. We turned the stuff we explained into posts.

We also made a DLO which had comments about different aspects of the films that we watched.

Oobleck Experiment

(Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr Seuss)

Question -  Is Oobleck solid or liquid?

It is a non-newtonian liquid. Because it can change between solid or liquid.

Hypothesis: I thought that it would be very much like slime but it wasn't. It was like slime but when it was solid, it was like dry play doh. I also thought that it would be a liquid because I have made it before but that was ages ago.

Materials:

1 bag of Cornflour

Measuring cup (1 cup)

Mixing Bowl

Food coloring

Step- by- Step Procedure

First, Put 1 cup of Cornflour in your bowl

Next, put 1 cup of water in your bowl and mix

Then, Start squeezing your Oobleck until it gets tough

Last, Now you have oobleck

Observations;

This is what Oobleck looks like:

These are the tests you carried out you must answer each question with a minimum of 2 sentences (more would be better).

  1. How did it behave when you slapped it? When I slapped it it was really hard, like hitting ice or concrete. When you hit it fast it is harder

  1. What happened when you placed a blob of oobleck on the table and poked it after a minute? How did it behave? It spread out like water, but it was really thick. It was like The Blob. When you poke it, your finger slips through it.

  1. What happened when you dipped your finger into the oobleck and slowly moved them around the bowl? It was like putting your hand in water or paint. It is also not so hard when you mix it slowly.

  1. What happened if you moved them faster? It gets harder because it takes the atoms longer to get out of the way

  1. What happened when you threw an oobleck ball in the air? (Did it retain its shape or not?) it retains its shape

  1.  When you pushed it how did it react? It would move and then spread out again like water, or paint.

  1. When you picked it up, did it all come up? Not all of it would come up because it dribbled down the sides of your hands when you picked it up. It also is hard to hold because when you hold it it turns into liquid.

  1. What happened when you poured it? It would move slowly and dribble out. Like lava out of a volcano.

  1. What happens with the shape of it? It takes the shape of whatever is holding it. Also whatever it is in

Analyze Your Observations: First we made it too runny so trajun put a half cup of cornstarch so it was not so runny. THEN it was too thick so we then put some water in. when it was finished there was a HUGE mess, it took forever to clean

What is your conclusion? The result was that it was a solid AND a liquid, which is a non-newtonian liquid. A non-Newtonian changes between solid and liquid.
